Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No – it’s the world’s first flying saucer built by technology enthusiasts in Iran.

Zohal – or Saturn in English – was unveiled at the exhibition of Strategic Technologies and is a flying machine furnished with an auto-pilot system, GPS and two separate HD imaging systems that take and send images simultaneously.

Its creators, a joint venture by Farnas Aerospace Company and Iranian Aviation and Space Industries Association (IASIA), said that the spaceship was designed for ‘aerial imagining’ and can be used for ‘various missions’.

“Easy transportation and launch and flying, making less noise, are some of the advantages of the device,” said ISNA, Iran’s students’ news agency.

The images and data captured with Zohal are transmitted via a small, portable navigation and monitoring center and the spaceship can fly both outdoor and indoor.

It is reported that the look of the flying saucer is similar to one from a 1950s Hollywood B-movie, pictured below.

So, next time you see a flying saucer, don’t run – say “cheese!”

Over to you: do you think this invention is worth the hype?
