The Cats may have taken home the premiership cup, but Adelaide's Brett Burton has taken out the AFL's mark of the year, while Hawthorn's Cyril Rioli has kicked the goal of the year.
Burton's round 22 grab against Carlton was clearly the favourite from the shortlist, giving him the Alex Jesaulenko Medal for the Mark of the Year. While Cyril Rioli's round seven six-pointer fought off some tough competition to take out the Phil Manassa Medal for the Goal of the Year.
"Without a doubt, it's the
best mark I've ever taken," Burton said of his medal-winning grab.
"It's
certainly the biggest mark I've ever taken.
"When I was up there, I
thought, 'whoa!'.
"It did feel good.
"It was a real buzz and this
award is something I will be very proud of, having returned from a knee
reconstruction."
Rioli said of his winning goal: "I am very honoured to
win the 2009 AFL Goal of the Year award, and I would like to thank the
All-Australian selectors for voting for me,
"I would also like to thank
my teammate Chance Bateman for giving me the handball to have the opportunity to
kick the goal.
"I feel privileged to follow in the footsteps of the other
indigenous players who have won this award - Leon Davis, Eddie Betts and Daniel
Wells."
What do you think guys, was this mark and goal the best of the year?
