Sacked AFL star Jason Akermanis faced-off against his his former Western Bulldogs CEO Campbell Rose on the AFL Footy Show last night, claiming he felt the club ambushed him with his termination.
Akermanis, the 2001 Brownlow Medalist, recently had his contract terminated by the Western Bulldogs just six weeks before the end of the home-and-away season and with a finals campaign awaiting the club.
Rose reiterated last night that the reasons surrounding the sacking were because of “breaches of trust”, but withheld specifics.
"In this case there was a loss of trust, a loss of faith and also, to a degree, a loss of respect," Rose told The Footy Show.
"Respect in terms of the playing group, the coaching group and as a result of that it permeated through the club.
"When you've got an employee, a team member, or someone who is part of your organisation and you lose trust in him, then it becomes a very difficult situation to maintain harmony and achieve a good outcome."
Naturally, Akermanis retaliated by suggesting the club ambushed him with his termination and
that was untrustworthy on their behalf.
"What more have I had to do over the past five weeks?"
"You've taken 13 days to give me a bullet when you could have easily done it two weeks before."
But his Bulldogs booting shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering Akermanis was suspended by the club in June after a controversial newspaper column he wrote in which he advised gay AFL footballers to stay in the closet followed by stupidly releasing details of a private club meeting to Footy Show panelist Sam Newman.
Do you think Akermanis’s sacking was fair?
