....HANGOVERS!

1

As we know all too well, a hangover is the unfortunate pay-off for a big night on the booze. The physiological symptoms include: dehydration, fatigue, headaches, body aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, gas, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, sensitivity to light and noise, severe hunger, increased libido, rank breath and not knowing where you are

2

Some lucky buggers — between 25 and 30 per cent of drinkers — are resistant to hangovers. Many people of East Asian descent have a certain mutation in their alcohol dehydrogenase gene that causes them to suffer from alcohol flush reaction(ie. red face) and prone to immediate and severe hangover symptoms

3

Dehydration is the root of most hangover-related pain. Because alcohol is a diuretic, it
makes you piss way more than usual. Also, with your liver working overtime to excrete the booze safely,it pulls water from wherever it can in your body, including your brain,
leaving you drier than a Steven Wright one-liner

4

Studies show that hangovers get worse as you get older. Boffins say this is caused by declining supplies of alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme involved in metabolising alcohol

5

Reckon you’ve had a bad hangover? Imagine how a 24-year-old Italian tourist felt the
morning after Aussie doctors saved his life by feeding him vodka through a drip for three days when they ran out of medicinal alcohol

6

Early hangover cures include the Mongols’ pickled sheep eyes and Assyrians’ ground bird beaks and myrrh
