Thousands of Aussies are coughing up over $800 bucks for the latest gadget sensation, the iPad. But Apple’s Steve Jobs says the newly announced iPhone 4 is the biggest leap in iPhone tech since it launched back in 2007. So, is it such a big leap that it now makes the iPhone better than the iPad? ZOO checks the specs to find out...
STORGAGE
The iPad starts at 16GB (about 3700 songs, 20,000 pics or 20 hours of porn), but also has a pricey 64GB version. The iPhone 4 also starts at 16GB, but only goes as high as 32GB. Either way, 64GB isn’t much in the way of storage these days. But, if you’re willing to pay for it, the top-end iPad can hold more stuff.
WINNER: iPad
THE SCREEN
At 24.6cm, the iPad’s screen makes the 8.9cm iPhone 4 screen look like a kid’s toy. But, the iPhone 4 has the highest resolution of any phone on the market. In fact, it’s so hi-res the human eye can’t detect the pixels, making it sharper than reality! Both are HD, but the iPad’s screen is more taxing on the battery.

GPS
The Global Positioning System doesn’t work on all models of the iPad — only the ones that are equipped with 3G (unfortunately, these are the more expensive ones). The iPhone 4, on the other hand, will run GPS anytime, anywhere, as long as it’s within range of a decent signal.
WINNER: iPhone 4
BATTERY LIFE
Even if you just turned it on and left it alone, the iPad would only give you ten hours of electric lovin’. But the iPhone 4 will give you up to ten hours of talk time (you can’t even make calls on an iPad), ten hours of WiFi action, ten hours of video and 40 hours of listening to tunes.
WINNER: iPhone 4
NETWORKING
Only some iPads can get WiFi, and only the 3G models will connect to 3G networks. The iPhone 4 connects to all those networks, as well as connecting to EDGE networks, which are a form of data transfer for mobile networks that run at three times the speed. Both have bluetooth, though.
WINNER: iPhone 4
PRICE
There’s no word on pricing for the iPhone 4 in Oz yet, but no matter what plan you go on, or what network you go with, it’ll be a lot softer on your wallet than an iPad. If US prices of the two products are anything to go by, the 16GB iPhone 4 will be about half the price of a 16GB iPad.
WINNER: iPhone 4

STUFF iPHONE 4 CAN DO… but iPad can’t
TAKE PHOTOSThe iPhone 4 has a crystal clear, five- megapixel still camera. iPad does not.
MAKE VOICE CALLSDespite the name, it’s easy
to forget the iPhone can actually make voice calls.
The iPad doesn’t even have this basic feature.
TAKE HD VIDEOThe iPhone 4 can record an amazing 20 hours of 720p HD video. The iPad can’t. The iPhone 4 also has built-in HD video editing software, so you can cut your films and even add soundtracks.
VIDEO CONFERENCINGWith a top-notch camera, and the necessary gizmos to make calls, the iPhone 4 is a brilliant video conferencing tool. Don’t even think about doing this on the iPad. Its teleconferencing specs are non-existent.
VERDICT
At the end of the day, if it’s a nice, big touchscreen you want, then nothing’s going to stop you getting an iPad. But in terms of value for money, tech specs, and other bells and whistles, the iPhone 4 craps all over the iPad. It’s also a massive step up from the iPhone 3, if you’re thinking of upgrading. The iPhone 4 hits the Australian market tonight at midnight, so go join the que!
