ARE WE READY FOR A FEMALE PM?
The nation experienced an emotional and tumultuous morning today with the Socceroos out of the World Cup on a victorious note (albeit unfortunate exit from the World Cup) followed by another victory for recently-appointed Labor Party leader and PM Julia Gillard.
We’re not surprised Gillard challenged K-Rudd, what with Rudd controlling her while he was on top and her having to work hard to raise the popularity of his poll. But like her blazing hair colour, Gillard saw red when the Australian Workers' Union withdrew its support of the ALP. Her fury deepened when NSW powerbroker Mark Arbib, Victorians Bill Shorten and Dave Feeney, and South Australian Don Farrell visited Ms Gillard to tell her they had lost confidence in the prime minister. These situations combined made Gillard challenge Rudd for leadership and, in a nation first, she won.
"I feel very honoured and I will be making a full statement very shortly," Ms Gillard said to the media as she left the party room.
What does the nation's first-ever woman PM mean for us? It’s hard to say. But, considering the throng of nations successfully past and presently guided by a leader with boobs (North Korea’s president’s
Kim Jong-Il moobs excluded) it’s a change that is long overdue.
Just look next door to New Zealand where Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark can boast “Prime Ministers” in bold on their CV and this trend has spread across the world with Sri Lanka, Portugal, Turkey (to name a few) sharing the same political history.
Babe-sperts we are. Political analysts, we’re not. So we, like you, will take this PM shift as it comes and we only hope that this encourages more (sexy) women to enter politics to raise the attention of members in Parliament.
Do you think Gillard will be a good PM?
